Are You Ready to Vote in U.S. Elections?

With the upcoming Presidential election, we want to make sure you're ready to vote if you are eligible! We hope that this information will allow you to confidently register to vote, know whether you can request a mail-in or absentee ballot and how to ensure an effortless voting process at the polls on Election Day. Voting in federal elections is both a right and a responsibility that comes with U.S. citizenship.

The specific requirements for registering to vote vary by state so it is important to confirm what your state’s minimum requirements are. States differ on residency requirements, felony conviction exceptions and definition of incompetent.

The most important thing to remember is that you must be a U.S. Citizen to register to vote. Lawful permanent residents and other non-citizens cannot vote!

If you register to vote (or vote) and you are not a U.S. Citizen, that can be a false claim to citizenship, and can make you deportable. If you have already registered to vote and you are not a U.S. citizen, consult with us or another qualified immigration attorney immediately.

Are you a lawful permanent resident who qualifies for naturalization, but you have not filed for naturalization yet? Get ready for next time!

Check out Emily’s video on Naturalization here to confirm you qualify.

If you meet these requirements and are ready to register to vote for the first time, make sure that you register to vote according to the deadlines and processes applicable in your state! Also keep in mind that there are multiple ways and times to vote. You can go in-person on Election Day, but many states also provide early (in-person) voting options, as well as mail-in voting options. Make a plan and get it done!
