USCIS announced today that in an effort to improve processing times for the N-400 (used to apply for naturalization) and I-485 (used to apply for the adjustment of status/permanent residence), they are re-distributing work to different field offices, which may be outside the applicant's jurisdiction. As part of the announcement, USCIS confirmed that fingerprinting appointments (biometrics) will still be done at the local ASC (Application Support Center).

This means that if you apply for citizenship or for permanent residence, your interview may not be scheduled at your "local" USCIS office. You may be required to travel to another city or possibly even another state, to attend the interview.

USCIS did not announce when this change would take effect, or if there would be an effort to schedule interviews at USCIS field offices that are perhaps at least in the same state or nearby state, rather than across the country.

We will keep our clients posted on further developments regarding this change, but in the meantime, be prepared to travel if you are scheduled for an N-400 or I-485 interview.
